Proper Dry Suit Care

Dry Suit seals are made of Latex, and over time will need to be replaced.  The breakdown of Latex is accelerated by increased exposure to UV light and oil based products (sunscreen and lotions).  While you can not prevent this breakdown you can slow down the process.  With proper care, you can greatly extend the life of your seals.  Here is a guideline for care and maintenance of seals.

1. After every usage, wash the latex seal inside and out with mild soap and water to remove all contamination.

2. Apple a Seal Saver or UV Tec to cleaned latex, both on the inside and outside of the seal.

3. Store the suit rolled up in its bag to minmize airflow around the seals.  This allows the Seal Saver or UV Tec to better protect the latex.

4. Apply Seal Saver or UV Tec to all seals prior to using the suit.

Tips for Cold Weather Sailing

One of the most important speed tips for cold weather sailing is to stay warm. staying warm.  When you're warm, you can concentrate better, which results in better sailing!

Tip #1: Wear a hat.  This sounds so simple, but heat escapes from your head, and having a hat on will keep you much warmer.  And baseball hats don't count.  Wear a wool or fleece hat (fleece is less scratchy), and you will be NICE AND TOASTY!

Tip #2: Glove Liners.  Dry gloves keep your hands dry from the ocean water, but you're still going to sweat on the inside.  Sweat = Cold Hands!  So what can you do to prevent this?  Put a glove liner on before you slip into your dry glove.  Think of it as long underwear for your hands!

Tip #3: Nylons.  If you have ever tried to slip into your booties with your dry suit socks, you've definitely wasted a lot of energy.  This problem can be easily corrected with nylon pantyhose.  Rubber (dry suit socks) against neoprene (booties) is just one big tug of war.  But slip the nylon over your seals and it will make all the difference in the world.
