What To Wear?

When planning what to wear while sailing, keep one thing in mind, layer up!  Layering will not only keep you warm, but it will also keep you dry by wicking moisture away from the skin.  By using layers, you will you will receive maximum comfort, resulting in maximum performance!

Layer 1: Base Layer

This is you wicking layer.  The first layer worn, it is designed to move moisture away from the skin, keeping you warm and dry.  Gill's i2 Tec and i2 Lite are base layers.  Remember, cotton does not make a good base layer.  Click here to view the under-layer page

Layer 2: Mid Layer

This layer is designed to be worn over a base layer and under an outer layer.  The mid layer is made from a synthetic fabric (such a fleece), and works with the base layer to aid the movement of moisture away from the skin.  Example of mid layers can be found on the fleece page.

Layer 3: Outer Layer

The final, outer layer is designed to keep water, and wind out.  This layer will not keep you warm on its own, but will provide you with water and windproof protection.  An important factor when purchasing an outer layer is the breathability.  If the garment is not breathable, moisture will be trapped inside, leaving you cold and sweaty.  Examples of outer layers are; spray tops, spray pants, dry suits and offshore foul weather gear.
